'Those final few hours were brutal': British duo finish extraordinary journey in Australia after paddling across the vast Pacific

One more day. Another day battling through the pitiless slide. Another round of raw palms holding onto unyielding oars.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles at sea – an extraordinary 165-day expedition over the Pacific Ocean that included near brushes with cetaceans, failing beacons and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

Strong 20-knot breezes off Cairns repeatedly forced their compact craft, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now achingly close.

Supporters anticipated on shore as a scheduled lunchtime finish evolved into afternoon, then 4pm, then dusk. At last, at eighteen forty-two, they came alongside the Cairns sailing club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe stated, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We found ourselves beyond the marked route and considered swimming the remaining distance. To finally be here, following years of planning, just feels incredible."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – departed from Lima, Peru on 5 May (a first try in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

During 165 ocean days, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, working as a team through daytime hours, one rowing alone at night while her teammate dozed just a few hours in a confined sleeping area.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a saltwater conversion device and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the duo depended upon an inconsistent solar power setup for limited energy demands.

Throughout the majority of their expedition across the vast Pacific, they've had no navigation equipment or location transmitters, making them essentially invisible, nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The women endured 30-foot swells, traversed marine highways and endured raging storms that, periodically, shut down every electronic device.

Groundbreaking Success

Still they maintained progress, one stroke after another, through scorching daylight hours, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They have set a new record as the initial female duo to row across the South Pacific Ocean, non-stop and unsupported.

Furthermore they gathered over eighty-six thousand pounds (179,000 Australian dollars) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Existence Onboard

The duo made every effort to maintain communication with civilization beyond their small boat.

Around day one-forty, they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – down to their last two bars with still more than 1,600km to go – but permitted themselves the luxury of opening one bar to mark the English squad's triumph in global rugby competition.

Personal Reflections

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she acknowledged, when they doubted their success. Beginning on the sixth day, a route across the globe's vastest waters appeared insurmountable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the water-maker pipes burst, yet after numerous mends, we accomplished a workaround and simply continued struggling with reduced energy during the final expedition phase. Every time something went wrong, we simply exchanged glances and went, 'naturally it happened!' Still we persevered."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we resolved issues as a team, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she remarked.

Rowe hails from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she paddled the Atlantic, trekked England's coastal trail, ascended Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. There might still be more.

"We had such a good time together, and we're enthusiastically preparing additional journeys as a team again. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
