Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled following the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location displayed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
