Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior official said the vandalism made him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
